Open Monday – Saturday 9am – 5pm and Sunday 10am – 5pmThe route to Capercaillie is clearly signposted, just travel north from Cessnock and follow the signs to Lovedale. This lesser known area on the eastern side of Hunter Valley Wine Country has a wide range of excellent accommodation options, cafes, galleries, sporting facilities and is also home of the famous Lovedale Long Lunch.
On approaching the winery the visitor is met with a picturesque rural scene of sweeping lawns with ducks and swans swimming on the lake amongst the willow trees. The vista flows across the Valley to the majestic Brokenback Range in the distance, and is flanked by an established Chardonnay vineyard on the hill. The entrance garden has colourful annuals spilling over the edge and then, tucked into this idyllic scene, the small modern winery building comes into full view.
The welcoming committee is on duty. ‘Ceilidh’ the new addition labrador, wanders down the path with tail wagging madly, says a polite hello and escorts the party between the gardens to the Cellar Door, with only a brief pause to watch the hot air balloon or the parachutes drifting through the air.
On entering, the light airy space is filled with fine glass, ceramics, silks and timbers to complement the original paintings adorning the walls – take your pick from Pro Hart, Norman Lindsay, watercolours, oils and lots more. A friendly smile from Alasdair or Trish greets all comers and invites you to sample the wine while browsing the gallery. After a pleasant chat, with all questions answered, farewells are said knowing that new friends have been made.
